Bagamoyo was once the port were slaves from the East African interior embarked on an uncertain journey across the Indian Ocean to Arabia and India. The name Bagamoyo itself is derived from the Swahili word “Bwaga moyo” meaning “lay your heart down”; this was an expression of despair by slaves who knew that they faced uncertain and bleak futures.
The town of Bagamoyo is located about 75 km north of Dar es Salaam; it is a place of great historical significance because it was the entry point for Arab traders, European missionaries, and European explorers into East and Central Africa. It also played a significant role in the infamous and tragic Indian Ocean slave trade.
