Zanzibar

The spice islands
A brief overview

About Zanzibar

The Zanzibar archipelago is made up of a series of islands located about 35 km off the coast of mainland Tanzania. The largest and most famous islands are Unguja (the main island, commonly referred to as Zanzibar Island) and Pemba. The name Zanzibar comes from the Arabic word “Zanj el Barr” which translates to “the coast of black people”.

The capital of Zanzibar is known as Zanzibar City and is located on Unguja Island. The old quarter of Zanzibar City is called Stone Town; it is a place of great historical significance. Stone Town is a UNESCO heritage site where you can embark on a number of excursions that will inform you about the events that shaped the history of Zanzibar.

Zanzibar is famous for its beautiful beaches, spice plantations, rich history and diverse culture. The island is also famous for water sports; in Zanzibar, you can engage in deep scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, kayaking, water skiing,  swimming with dolphins, deep sea fishing and sailing local wooden dhows.

Zanzibar is an excellent place to relax and unwind after spending some time doing a safari or climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Zanzibar has plenty to offer hence it is a  great place for families. Honeymooners and couples also find it to be a perfect romantic getaway.

The islands of Zanzibar are home to some of the most critically endangered species in the world; the animals include red colobus monkeys, whale sharks, bottlenose dolphins, and dugong.
