Katavi National Park

Africa at its best
The African wilderness at its best

Katavi National Park

Katavi National Park is the third largest in Tanzania; it is located in western Tanzania and offers a true unspoiled wilderness experience. Katavi is Africa at its best; here you will experience spectacular sceneries and rich wildlife views far away from the beaten tracks of the other national parks. Inside Katavi, you can’t help but feel like you have stepped back a thousand years. Katavi is a truly wild place with very few visitors and few camps.

Inside Katavi National Park the mains game viewing areas are around the Katuma River and the surrounding floodplains such as the season lakes of Katavi and Chada. When the seasonal rains come, these lakes become a lush and mashy haven that supports the densest concentration of hippos and crocodiles in Tanzania.

Katavi National Park can be visited year round but like the Selous, it is the dry season(May to October and December to February) that offers the best game viewing experience. As the flood waters retreat and the Katuma river gets reduced to a muddy trickle, as many as 4000 thousand elephants and over a 1000 buffaloes converge around the only remaining waters sources.  Giraffes, impalas, zebras, and reedbucks also converge on the water source and they provide easy meals for the lions prides and hyena clans whose domain spans across the floodplains. The concentration of animals that you will see around the floodplains is unbelievable.

The main activity in Katavi is daytime game viewing.
