Pangani is a historical town that was once a trading center specializing in ivory and slaves from the African interior. The town has a remarkable history dating as far as the 15th century; old historical buildings and monuments can still be seen around the town. The name Pangani is derived from the Pangani river which flows from Mount Kilimanjaro into the Indian Ocean through the northern part of this town.
Pangani was a strategic town for both the Arabs, Germans and later on the British; of all these powers, the Arabs had the strongest influence on the town. Several historical sites around the town bear testimony to a strong Arabic influence.
Pangani is an ideal place to visit if you are looking to experience authentic African culture in a quiet and unspoiled setting; the town is quiet and far away from the touristy crowds.
