When you choose to climb with us, you climb with professional, experienced, medically trained and well-paid guides. Our guides are licensed by Kilimanjaro National Park Service, certified Wilderness First Responders (WFR) and extensively trained on emergency, rescue and evacuation protocols.
Our guides possess rare leadership skills that instill confidence in hikers. We run drills with them every few months to make sure they skills stay as sharp as expected.
At Sabaya Tours we are focused on safety; we understand that our utmost responsibility is to keep our clients safe from the risks associated with mountain climbing. Our guides are trained and equipped to prevent, detect and treat altitude sickness. Our rescue and evacuation protocols are well understood by the guides.
Sabaya Tours implements the following safety measures:
We use high-quality equipment and gear to ensure that our clients are as comfortable as possible. Our equipment is suited for the rigorous conditions on Mount Kilimanjaro – the tents are warm, waterproof and spacious; we provide quality sleeping pads/mattresses for everyone.
We also have high-quality mountain gear for rent to our clients; climbing gear is expensive, renting rather than buying, saves you money. Rental gear is only available to Sabaya Tours clients; we do not rent to other companies or individuals climbing with other companies.
If you ever want to rent gear, kindly always consider renting from us; this is the only way we can guarantee the quality of the gear you will be using on the mountain. Bulky items such as sleeping bags and down coats are ideal rental items; if you carry them from home, they will increase your airline baggage significantly.
We are deeply committed to promoting environmentally and socially responsible enjoyment of Mount Kilimanjaro. Our guides and porters are educated on the importance of keeping the mountain clean.
We are committed to improving the working conditions of porters on Mount Kilimanjaro; when you climb with us, rest assured that your guides and porters are treated well. We take care of our porters in the following ways:
We are also a member of the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) which is a non-profit organization that strives to improve the working conditions of porters on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Many companies offering Kilimanjaro climbs are not legitimate climbing companies with their own guides and gear; they are agencies that get your money and then subcontract the climb to questionable local companies in Tanzania.
At Sabaya Tours, we run our own climbs with our own guides and equipment; this ensures that the quality of the gear always meets our high safety standards. By running our own climbs we also ensure that our services are safe and of the highest quality possible.
We prepare delicious, nutritious and calorie rich meals with fresh and local ingredients. The meals have a high liquid and carbohydrate content to hydrate and energize climbers. Our meals are designed to meet your nutritional requirements and please your palate even at extreme altitudes.
We serve our meals in spacious dining tents equipped with chairs, table and gas lamps for warmth and lighting. We also cater for all special dietary needs – for example, we offer vegetarian, gluten-free, halal and Kosher menus. If you have special dietary requirements, just let us know.
Enough clean water is also provided to keep our climbers hydrated.
When you choose to climb with us, you have a choice; you can decide to join a group or embarking on a private climb with your own guides and porters.
If you choose to climb in a group, you will be joining a small group. We believe that small groups are the best way to climb Kilimanjaro. We do not create large climbing groups because they make it hard for hikers to enjoy the experience. Having small groups ensures that each and every climber gets proper attention from our guides.
The main reason why climbers don’t make it to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro is due to altitude sickness, which is caused by lack of proper acclimatization. The best way to avoid altitude sickness is acclimatizing your body gradually over time.
At Sabaya Tours we have carefully optimized our itineraries to make sure they allow maximum acclimatization for our climbers. Our itineraries are crafted to allow gradual ascent over time, instead of a quick ascent in a few days; ascending gradually over time is the best acclimatization strategy.
At Sabaya Tours we invest in areas that are ecologically and economically vulnerable; we make investments focused on lifting communities out of poverty and benefitting environmental conservation efforts. We believe that local communities are inseparable from their environment; every investment we make is focused on addressing people’s needs and the needs of the local ecology.
We support and contribute to the following initiatives/organizations; every time you choose to climb with us, you are making a positive impact on people’s lives and the environment. We actively contribute to the following initiatives from our earnings:
Tanzania Green Encompassment Transformation 2050 (TAGET 2050)
TAGET(2050) is an organization registered in Tanzania with the vision to empower Tanzanian communities to engage in social business investment through quality education and skills training, modern agricultural production practices, crop processing and conservation of medicinal and other plants of economic importance.
The founders of Sabaya Tours are also the founders of this organization; they passionately support it because they believe this is the best way to give back to society and make a lasting positive impact on people’s lives and the environment.

Rice Husk Cooking Stoves Program
In Tanzania, just like other sub-Saharan countries, households rely on the harvesting of natural and wild trees for charcoal making in order to supply their daily energy needs. This approach results in negative health impact for women and children who are exposed to harmful fumes from charcoal; it also increases stress on delicate ecosystems due to the cutting down of trees.
At Sabaya Tours, we are supporting and encouraging the local community to find creative ways to exploit alternative and cheap energy sources such as the use of rice husks as an alternative energy source for cooking instead of cutting down trees to make charcoal.
Through the Rice Husk Cooking Stoves Program, we buy rice husk cooking stoves from local manufacturers(hence supporting them) and then we sell these stoves to local households at a subsidized price (we subsidize more than 90% of the market value of these stoves); the households are expected to pay the subsidized price in one year.
We decided to initiate this project for the following reasons:
